VÁRPALOTA

Várpalota is a significant town at the foothills of Bakony Mountain. Due to its favourable environment it became a populous area since ancient times. The most outstanding building dating back to medieval ages, is a castle built in the 14th century. It is located in the heart of the town centre. It is important to mention that Beatrix of Aragon resided in this very castle in preparation for her wedding ceremony to King Matyas. The event was held in Fehérvár  the following day. Later the fortress served as a border castle under the command of the György Thury the famous defeater of Turks. He was one of the most galant soldier figures of the Hungarian border castle life. Nowadays, the castle gives home to the Museum of Hungarian Chemistry which is the only independently operating museum of chemistry in Middle-Europe. Furthermore, it displays a rich exhibition of Mining History. The Zichy Castle’s renovation in 1865 was ordered by János Waldstein squire, the construction implemented the plans of the famous architect Miklós Ybl in classicist, romantic style. In the castle we can discover the Trianon Museum.
The Bakony Mountain surrounding the city offers many beautiful excursion sites, and hunting territories for the lovers of active tourism.
