Castle of Salgó is located above Salgóbánya on the top of the 625 metres high volcanic cone north from Salgótarján. The ruins and its surroundings are the part of a nature reserve which is a favoured by hikers due to its diversity. Probably, after the Mongol invasion (1241-1242) the Kacsics clan started the construction of the castle in order to prevent another havoc.
Reffering to a certificate from the year of 1341 the castle from the 13th century was named as Castrum Salgov. The Ottoman Empire occupied the castle in 1554, however, it was taken back in 1593. Even if it is in ruins still offers a spectacular view which was visited by Hungary’s finest poem, Sándor Petőfi who wrote his poem, the Salgó in 1845.
The so-called Boszorkánykő with nature trails lies south from the Castle where can discover various rocks and basalt columns at the gorge volcano. From the top we can enjoy the view of Bükk and Börzsöny Mountain ranges, moreover, the mountain ridge of High-Tátra can be seen in good weather. This popular hiking destination with its archaeological excavation site is an attractive destination for lovers of castles.
