RÁCKEVE
Ráckeve is situated on the southern part of Csepel Island, fifty kilometres south from the capital. Its Baroque building is considered as the main highlight of the city in historic and touristic manners. Its construction started in 1702 and lasted almost for two decades. It’s the work of Johann Lucas Hildebrandt (1668-1745) and is the first monument that represents the Baroque architectural style in Hungary. The building complex stands on the former lands of the great general Jenő Savoyai. Another monument, favoured destination of tourists, is the Árpád Museum which awaits its visitors since 1963 and displays the region’s relics. Its name originates from a famous historic event when Prince Árpád led his tribe, the Megyer Tribe to the Danube’s region and established his very first province. Also we can discover Hungary’s only remaining Gothic Serbian Orthodox Church with its astonishing murals, built in 1487. Since milling has been an important profession in the settlement’s life, one of the remaining mills was reconstructed and still available to visit.
