PÁCIN

Pácin is an ancient village located on the Slovak-Hungarian border. The castle was built between 1533 and 1556. At the time, more and more residences were built by the middle nobles away from the Turkish occupation’s battlefields, and for these residences the convenience was an important factor. That is how they formed the castle’s spacious, well-heated tiled halls which were framed with Renaissance windows. The noble house protected its inhabitants against small, lightly armed robbers, but against bigger, cannon armed corps it was ineffective. It was damaged during the Kuruc-Labanc clashes, but its lords always repaired it. In the 19th century it was rebuilt in romantic style. In the second half of the 20th century the late Renaissance reconstruction of the castle was done. Today Bodrogközi Castle Museum is housed in this beautiful building, which is Hungary’s largest Renaissance palace, therefore it has a special historic significance. The area is rich in Árpád-era monuments from the conquest and settlement times. The settling Hungarians used the area as winter quarters, and at the time of the conquest it served as an authority center as well. The ground floor’s exhibition of the castle museumreports of this period.
