NAGYVÁZSONY
Nagyvázsony, situated at the foothills of Kab Mountain, along the road from Tapolca to Veszprém, is for sure one of the most beautiful communities of the Balaton Uplands. The medieval fortress on the hill-side gives a unique atmosphere to the landscape. According to historical sources the castle was erected in the middle of the 15th century. The first lords of the castle were from the noble Vezsenyi family. After the family’s spear side died out, King Mátyás Hunyadi gave the fortress to Pál Kinizsi for his wartime deeds. By this time the castle was converted to a four-towered stronghold. Its main duty was to oversee the trade route between Buda and Rome. During the Ottoman threat it served as a border-castle. These days, the castle is stage for Renaissance games, festivities. The Castle Museum displays a rich repertory which summons the medieval days for the history lovers. Öregtorony (28 m) is one of the most preserved late-gothic tower remaining in Transdanubia.
Szent Mihály Monastery and Church were erected under the instructions of Pál Kinizsi in memory of the kenyérmező of 1479. The construction was financed by the booty gained after the battle in the early 1480’s. The building became the home for the monks of the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit. Their cerebration’s evidence are many copies of codex, which survived the ages and were preserved for posterity.
