KÖRMEND
The picturesque town of Kormend lies along the river Raba in Vas county, West-Transdanubia. The earliest documents referring to the settlement dating back to the 18th century. Its fortress that served as the bastion of the border fortresses at the time of the Ottoman threat, was probably erected in the 15th century. It needed reconstruction several times. In 1604, the fortress became the property of the ancient noble family of Battány. Later it was rebuilt in the classicist style. Nowadays it is a defining part of the town centre.The Castle Museum with its rich exhibition, and the Batthyány Chapel, are beautiful destinations for tourists, on exhibit is the shoe-history of Hungary. Dr László Bathyány-Strattmann (1870-1931) after whom the building was named established an eye-hospital and treated his patients for free. In 2003, Pope John the Second beatified him for his philanthropist deeds.
In the old quarter in front of the late-gothic Saint Elizabeth church, which was reconstructed in baroque style, the marble statue of the town founder King Béla the Fourth stands. The famous pilgrimage route of Saint Martin passes the town, it connects several countries /France, Italy, Slovenia, Hungary/. The town’s environment perfect for excursions.
