EDELÉNY

Edelény is a small town in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, 25 kilometers from the county seat, Miskolc. Here you will find one of the largest and most remarkable Baroque castles, which was built at the beginning of the 18th century for the Lorraine-born János Ferenc L’Huillier, who excelled with his bravery in the 1686 liberation campaign, and therefore received nobility and estate. The castle which is standing on the island of Bódva. It has monumental halls decorated with frescoes which are the odd ones of their kind. The castle, which has 106 rooms and 365 windows, was raised by the Italian master Carlone in accordance with the early baroque and rococo style. The castle was surrounded by French baroque styled landscaped gardens, these were shaped into a unique English garden in the first half of the 19th century. In the outskirts of Edelény another historical monument, the castle of Borsod can be seen, which was first mentioned by Anonymous around 1200. During the exploration work the archaeologists has found small houses and open furnaces corresponding with the Árpád-era. The only stone building could have been the home of the leader of the 10th century settlement. In 2000 a historic memorial park was opened in the inside of the castle. The area of Edelény has several natural treasures and ancient monuments. The surrounding villages offer rich historical legacy, unique natural scenery and luscious wines for the tourists.
