DOMBÓVÁR

Dombóvár is considered to be a centre of the region due to its geographical and touristic features. The town is situated in Kapos Valley in the south-western part of Tolna County. It was also an important settlement in the Roman Empire, where from roads led to Győr and Óbuda. Hereabout, a fortress functioned in Hosszúhetény. Its first known fortress was a dungeon from the 12th century. On the riverbank of Kapos ruins of castle can be seen, the Gólyavár was built after the Mongol Invasion. During the Turkish conquering it became the town raised to be a regional centre with permanent militia. After the Ottoman supremacy Pál Esterházy bought the land and established his lordship centre. The vast development arrived with the construction of the railway-network. Consequently, the little town linked in to the national country-road system.
Nowadays, the Local History Museum comprehensively displays the struggling history of the town and its surroundings. The institution tends the collection of Railway history and the early medieval residential tower. Furthermore, there is a museum devoted to the memory of the well-known writer István Fekete.
The land offers a great destination of cyclist and fishermen, also a popular medical bath awaits its visitors.
