BUDAPEST / BUDAI VÁR

Soon after the leaving of the Tartars in 1242, King Béla the Fourth fearing another devastating invasion, he ordered a large-scale construction of stonewalled castles in the entire kingdom to protect the country. This deed also included Buda where he built a royal house too. Now the Castle quarter is the capital’s first district and has been titled as Budai várnegyed in UNESCO’s world heritage list since 1987. Spectacular monuments from the medieval, houses and public buildings from the 17th-18th century await their visitors. Furthermore, many significant museums and their unique works of art can be found here, such as the Budapest History Museum, Hungarian National Gallery and the Hungarian Military History Museum. In addition, another ornament of the district is the Mátyás Church or the so-called Assumption Church which formerly functioned as a crowning church.
