Southern Transdanubia

GÖRCSÖNY

Görcsöny is situated on the eroded lava dome of South-Baranya Hill, 15 kilometres south from Pécs.
According to the best of our knowledge, the area has been inhabited since the Celts arrived to this land. It served as a crossroad for many busy roads. After the Turkish occupation the Jesuits bought the area due to the rich clay resource at the settlement’s border. Furthermore, the order’s house in Pécs, the villa in Görcsöny, respectively, was constructed using these bricks. Among others the latter, in where the master of the order in Pécs and Kőszeg, wrote the first Hungarian sonnet, the ‘A pipárúl’. The house was surrounded with an imposante thirty hectares big park, these days twelve hectares of the park are available for visitors. When Pope Kelemen the 16th disbanded the Jesuit order, the villa turned into the hands and later to a chateau of the county’s József Mihalovics subperfect.
A Neo-Baroque church can be found in the park which was consecrated in 1812. When the Mihalovics family went bankrupt in 1860, the land changed hands to the Benyovszky family who cultivated a strong relationship with royal court. Consequently, the most famous guest was József Ferenc who lived here during military exercises near to Pécs. The building reached its present appearance by following the instructions of Rudolf Benyovszky in the 30s of the past century. Among the settlement’s sights we can discover the Uniqum square, Szent Hubertus square, respectively, the latter representing the work of the sculptor Zoltán Pál’s memorial stone devoted for the 1956’s revolution.
