SIROK

The main monument of Sirok is the castle built by the Aba clan stands on a 296 metres high volcanic cone at the boundary of Bükk and Mátra mountains. At first it was mentioned by a certificate from 1320. During the Turkish conquering it was fortified with an inner keep and a lower keep with three early Italian bastions. One hundred cavalry were added to the castle’s garrison so that it could functioned as a part of the border fortress defence line, particularly as Eger’s strongest outpost. After the fall of Eger in 1596 the garrison left the castle and the Turkish army could marched into without a single slash of a sword. Later in return, in 1687 the allies sieged Eger to reclaim it and the Turkish garrison at Sirok left the castle to support their companions so that the Hungarians were able to take back the castle easly.
Nowadays, the spectacular castle houses exhibitions which demonstrates the everyday life of the court, in addition, visitors can try the costumes of that time besides presenting the contemporary professions.
Not far from Sirok we can visit Hungary’s unique sphagnum marsh the Nyírjes which is a favoured hiking destination.
