LOKET CASTLE

This is a 12th-century Gothic style castle about 12 kms from Karlovy Vary on a massive rock in the town of Locket. It is sorrounded on three sides by the Ohře river. The impressive castle today is divided into 9 different parts containing many medieval artefacts of historical interest.

Besides the Margrave’s House where an exhibition of porcelain is on display and the remains of a Romanesque rotunda, the smallest of its type int he Czech Repulic, the castle also features the prison cells and the chamber of torture, the wedding and the cermonial hall, the historical arms and Archeological hall, a Romaneque prismatic tower, the 15t-century burgrave’s house and the captain’s house, and a 16th-century amasing palace.

Town with the castle was very important part of defence system of the Czech Kingdom. Czech monarchs were aware of importance of the town and granted the Locket inhabitants a lot privileges. From the 1250s the castle was gradually enlarged and the formerly Romanesque building turned into a Gothic stronghold which was often visited by the members of the royal family.

There are many interesting things to see at Locket Castle. The most popular of its expositions include the prison with torture display, the museum of weapons,and the porcelain exhibtions.
