Křivoklat is a market town in the Central Bohemian Region, 50 km west of Prague. The castle belongs to the oldest and most important castles of the Czech Republic.Records mentioning the royal castle were first recorded around 1100 A.D. The Protected Landscape Area of Křivoklátsko conceals a castle which due to its excellent location surrounded by forests, was a favourite of many Czech kings. This royal residence was built in the 13th century as a seat of the ruling Přemyslid dynasty. During the reign of Přemysl Otakar II a large royal castle was built and later enlarged by King Vladislav of Jagellou. The castle is one of the most significant royal residences in the Republic. It was a place of residence for Luxembourg dynasty too. The Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV spent there a part of his childhood. It was damaged by fire several times. The last owners, the Fürstenberks, saved the castle by renovating it. It took 100 years. Today it serves as a museum, tourist destination and place for theatrical exhibitions. Collections of hunting weapons, Gothic paintings, precious books are stored there. Nowadays it is second most visited castle in Czech Republic. Castle is considered unique from architectonic point of view, also for being similar to the French castle conception. One of the best things about a trip to Křivoklat is the surrounding countryside, with numerous trails perfect for hiking and biking.
