A picturesque countryside of Gemer set in the heart of Slovakia.The castle is situated east of Rožnava. It stands on top of the mountain, which dominates the Rožnarská Kothina Basin. The exceptional collections in the castle museum and different types of architecture attract visitors from all over the world. The original Gothic castle was built around 1320. The first recorded mention was in 1333.Fortifications were added in time of Osman Turkish threat. The invasion requested modernisation and a new fortification system therefore fortifications including 3 canon bastions int he Renaissance style were built. In addition, it was when the interior of the castle got more Gothic-Renaissance shape and when it acquired its present form. The Andrássy family obtained the castle in 1642. In 1735 the area in front of the castle gates was adapted and the small Baroque chapel of St. John Nepomuk was built there. The impressive castle houses the exhibitons of the Museum of Betliar, which illustrates the history and development of the castle, as well as theway of life of nobles in the past. As the castle with its original funiture is one of the best preserved in the country, it is worth visiting. The most precious exhibits are medieval and modern weapons, such as a bronze cannon from 1547 and stock of cannon ball sor castle rifles from the 18th and 19th century. In 1961 the castle was designated a National Cultural Monument. On 10th March 2012 the castle was extensively damaged by fire. Its renovation is continous this days as well.
